Americans are Retarded

July 18, 2008 – 22:31

I was just finally browsing reddit for the day and the number one link is a quiz that has 12 questions about political questions. I took the quiz and got a 12/12 which puts me in the 97th percentile, but when you really dig into it, the results just show how stupid Americans really are.

Overall the average is 6/12. Then look at 18-29 and it’s a pitiful 4/12. This shit is going on around us, it’s not that hard to pay just a small amount of attention to the world.

What’s even sadder is the breakdown by each question. I can understand that the most incorrectly answered question was asking who is the Senate Majority leader at only 24%, but when only 28% of the people taking the quiz don’t even know how many U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq, then that’s just fucking pathetic and it makes me sick. But I guess it’s OK, because we all buy our “Support the Troops” ribbons to put on our cars so that gives us a free pass to ignore everything that’s going on over there.

Just maybe everyone knew the answers, it might have been because the questions were phrased incorrectly. Case in point:

Do you happen to know what state U.S. Senator John McCain represents in Congress?

That’s one of the questions, and it gives you four states to choose from. He’s from Arizona, but that’s not what the question asks. Do you happen to know means they’re looking for a Yes or No answer. That wasn’t a choice, so perhaps people just took the first option. I doubt it though. Maybe Americans aren’t retarded, but they just don’t care about anything but what’s going around in their little world.

Announcing: Brewer Leaders

July 9, 2008 – 22:32

I’ve been planning a website dedicated to tracking the statistical leaders for the Milwaukee Brewers in several categories.  I’ve been working on it for the past week and so far am very happy with the outcome.

So without further adieu, I extend invitations to Brewer Leaders.

Time Warner Set to Lose Me as a Customer

June 3, 2008 – 19:16

I just read some disturbing news regarding my ISP. Starting on Thursday Time Warner Cable is going to metering usage for the Internet in some town in Texas. The plan is a pilot program, but if it catches on you can bet your ass Time Warner is going to be getting an angry call from me as I cancel their service.

I can understand some limits, but don’t set them so low that just about everyone will be affected by it. The slow service of 768kbps will get a mere 5 GB a month for $30, and $55 a month will get you 15mbps but you can only use it up to 40 GB. Extra gigs will cost $1.

Are you fucking kidding me!? More and more things are going to digital distribution. It’s not unheard of to download programs that are a couple gigabytes. And online movies have to add up the usage. As a Netflix user with the Roku box I’ll be using more and more bandwidth, so I’m 100% positive I’ll be using more than that 40 GB.

If you think about it, I think Time Warner wants to stop those services so people will be forced to use their On Demand service to get movies. I for one will never get a movie using their service again and am already researching other ISPs in my area. And if they lose me as a customer for the Internet, they can be damn sure they’ll lose me as a customer for their television service as well.

Netflix Watch Now on my TV. Giddy-Up.

May 20, 2008 – 18:31

I had a pretty busy day at work today so when I came home for lunch I didn’t have time to read up on the news. When I got home I saw some awesome news. Roku, some company I’ve never heard of but I’m assured it exists, just released their new Netflix Watch Now box for your TV.

I’ve been a Netflix user for years and love their Watch Now service. But I rarely boot into Windows so I’m often screwed out of watching those movies. So the fact that there’s a box that costs $100 and allows you to stream the movies right to your TV. Giddy-Up.

The box can use either wireless or a wired connection. Unfortunately there’s no HD movies, but that’s not because of the box (it supports HD) but Netflix Watch Now currently does not broadcast in HD.

I ordered mine today so I’ll be sure to let you know how it is.

Blogs stealing my content? It’s more likely that you think.

May 18, 2008 – 13:21

J!nx has a shirt that sums up 655321web.com, Nobody Reads My Blog. I’m alright with the fact that no one reads this, in fact looking closely at it, I bring pretty much nothing to the Internet. I don’t really care, I like to write crap.

I only bring up that fact because I decided to check out my Akismet spam filter. I was quite amazed at the number of trackbacks that I’ve been receiving. I checked out one of the sites and the article linking to my article looked quite familiar. Hey, that’s because it’s the exact same thing. People are automatically stealing my content. I’m not upset, I’m more amazed that someone would want to steal the dribble that I’ve been putting out.

How long do the Brewers march out 1/3rd of their regulars with averages under the Mendoza Line?

May 18, 2008 – 13:12

My goodness, I knew the Brewers have been sucking it up hardcore on the offense, but I didn’t notice that it was this bad. One third of their regulars are batting under .200!

Rickie Weeks is leading the group with a disappointing .189 batting average, with Mike Cameron at .194 and Mr. Strikeout Bill Hall is at an impressive .196 considering how often he strikes out.

It wouldn’t be so bad if this wasn’t the 44th game of the year, but the season is over a quarter done and they’ve been severely underperforming against their expectations. I had a lot of hope for this season and I was feeling very good after their 6-1 start, but it’s been nothing but disappointment since.

I’ll continue to watch and go to the games, because god damn they’re due, but I no longer have any expectations for the season. Without expectations, I can’t be let down again for the umpteenth year in a row.

Shut Up Tim McCarver!

May 17, 2008 – 15:49

It’s times like today that I’m thankful as a Brewer fan that I don’t have to sit through many nationally televised broadcasts. Just listening to the broadcast crew makes me want to hurt baby deer.

It’s not just that the Brewers are playing horribly. It’s all due to the fact that Tim McCarver is absolutely the worst commentator I’ve ever had the displeasure of listening to. It’s just that he says some of the dumbest things I’ve ever heard.

Case in point in the top of the second inning Prince Fielder doubled to lead off the inning. Corey Hart came to at bat and tried to bunt for a base hit. McCarver went on for what seemed like forever about how that was a stupid play. He couldn’t get it through his skull that Hart wasn’t trying to sacrifice him over (which is what ended up happening), but he was trying to bunt for a base hit! Corey Hart has the speed to do that, and that is part of his game.

It’s only the third inning and if I continue to listen to this crap I’ll likely be considered mentally retarded after 9 innings of it.

Oh and for those of you who are interested, I’m not the only person who hates McCarver’s comments. Just head on over to Shut Up Tim McCarver and read all about his bone-headed comments.

Dig Dug 200/200

May 17, 2008 – 15:38

It seemed like only yesterday that I went over the average score for Dig Dug. It was actually two days ago. I never thought I’d get the other 50 points in Dig Dug mainly because it just seemed like too much effort for such a little amount of gamer points.

But I just couldn’t leave well enough alone. The one achievement worth 35 points didn’t give me much trouble thanks to the game letting you skip levels. But it was the last one that gave me a lot of heartache. You need to clear every amount of dirt on the map. It’s extremely difficult because the enemies just follow you and there is a lot of dirt.

I almost had it last night, I had just a sliver left when I died. I didn’t think I did, but what do I know. I tried again this morning a couple times and I managed to get it. So now I’m 200/200 in my sixth XBLA title. Go me!

Only Underachieving for 5 Games

May 15, 2008 – 20:51

When MyGamerCard released their new feature letting you know how much more or less effort you’ve spent compared to other gamers, I was pretty darned excited. I had been trying to get my gamerscore for each game over the average, now there would be a percentage to go along with it and new sorting options.

At the time I had played 51 games, 42 of those were above average with only 9 classified as underachieving. I’ve been actively trying to get overachieving for all of them and it’s definitely been a challenge.

Today I’m happy to report that I’m down to only 5 out of a total of 65 games. I was right on the fence with Dig Dug. I had 105 and the average was 105.05. I managed to get 2 achievements for 45 points, so now I’m sitting at a cool 150.

The only games I have left are:

  • The Orange Box - 19.88% underachievement. I haven’t had too much time to actually play this game, other than Portal, I’ve barely made a dent into Half-Life 2. I just need to sit down and play it and I should be able to get it with little troubles.
  • Lost Odyssey - 29.44% underachievement. I finished the first disc last month, and haven’t played it since. I have no idea why I took the break, but now that I’m pretty much done with The Simpsons Game, this is going right back onto the playlist.
  • Geometry Wars: Evolved - 48.51% underachievement. This is the one that I’m doubting if I’ll ever get 20 more points. I have 20 so far and I had to try so damn hard to even get those. It’ll take a lot of practice on my part.
  • Ninety-Nine Nights - 51.48% underachievement. I hate this game. With a passion. It’s so boring, but when you’re right about to finish a level you die and have to restart. I’m slowing going through it again. I need to beat it with 2 more characters, and I’m about 1/3rd done with 1 of those characters. I’m not looking forward to this…
  • DW5 Empire - 86.22% underachievement. I haven’t really played this game too much, and when I do it makes no sense. I just need to sit down one afternoon and play it, and I’ll pound out a number of achievements.

I’ll be sure to let you know when I knock another one of those off my list.

Quite the HD DVD Collection

May 14, 2008 – 07:02

I finally got my free HD DVD movies from Toshiba last week and I just put them in with my other titles. I was quite amazed at how many movies I actually owned. By my count, I see 27 and I haven’t even paid that much for movies. It was nice when Toshiba announced they were discontinuing it and all the prices dropped. Which was really why I was never all that upset when I learned it had failed. Well here’s the list:

  1. 2001 A Space Odyssey
  2. 300
  3. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
  4. Blade Runner (5-Disc Complete Collector’s Edition)
  5. Blood Diamond
  6. The Bourne Identity
  7. The Bourne Supremacy
  8. The Bourne Ultimatum
  9. Casino
  10. The Chronicles of Riddick
  11. Clerks II
  12. The Departed
  13. Eyes Wide Shut
  14. Four Brothers
  15. Heroes Season 1
  16. Hot Rod
  17. Inside Man
  18. The Italian Job
  19. King Kong
  20. Pan’s Labyrinth
  21. Planet Earth
  22. A Scanner Darkly
  23. Serenity
  24. Shaun of the Dead
  25. Shooter
  26. Troy
  27. V For Vendetta

I think I’m going to cease actively collecting movies, I’m very happy with Netflix. The only ones I’d consider picking up still are the rest of the Stanley Kubrick collection.
