Time Warner Set to Lose Me as a Customer

June 3, 2008 – 19:16

I just read some disturbing news regarding my ISP. Starting on Thursday Time Warner Cable is going to metering usage for the Internet in some town in Texas. The plan is a pilot program, but if it catches on you can bet your ass Time Warner is going to be getting an angry call from me as I cancel their service.

I can understand some limits, but don’t set them so low that just about everyone will be affected by it. The slow service of 768kbps will get a mere 5 GB a month for $30, and $55 a month will get you 15mbps but you can only use it up to 40 GB. Extra gigs will cost $1.

Are you fucking kidding me!? More and more things are going to digital distribution. It’s not unheard of to download programs that are a couple gigabytes. And online movies have to add up the usage. As a Netflix user with the Roku box I’ll be using more and more bandwidth, so I’m 100% positive I’ll be using more than that 40 GB.

If you think about it, I think Time Warner wants to stop those services so people will be forced to use their On Demand service to get movies. I for one will never get a movie using their service again and am already researching other ISPs in my area. And if they lose me as a customer for the Internet, they can be damn sure they’ll lose me as a customer for their television service as well.
